"My background is in photography and for many years I shot still life in my Manhattan studio. I also shot black & white landscapes as well as portraits. I am now a 3D digital illustrator, but I think like a photographer, which is to say I conceptualize in terms of object placement (composition) and lighting. I like to tell stories too and form•Z allows me to do this more easily than any 3D program I have ever used."

Games from the garage: Croquet
This image was done to honor a friend from my youth, who lived in our garage and gained mythical proportions over the years.
Modeled in form•Z; rendered in ElectricImage.

Absolute Hangover
Exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum show entitled: "Digital: Printmaking Now" in 2001. My departure from the standard treatment of the bottle.
Modeled and rendered in form•Z RenderZone. Poser and Amorphium were also used for some of the details.

Birdcage

The New Millenium
Annual report cover, Federal Reserve Bank, NY.
Modeled in form•Z; rendered in ElectricImage and Bryce.

"Curios From the Closet: Science".
One of my Images of the Month made after 9/11, when I had to close my still life photography studio. I had lots of space there to store things from the family. When I found the microscope and rock collections I decided it was time to make a 3D scene with them. I used calipers to measure every element of the microscope, so it would be built to scale. The rest of the elements represent things related to science which I remember coming across as a kid.
Modeled in form•Z; rendered in ElectricImage.
"Sparkplug"
This was modeled and rendered in Form•Z with a magnifying glass, and probably calipers, in hand to see every detail.
"Gas Pump"
This was also made for a trade magazine, but the original just had the pump, lamp and roadside. I added the building after seeing a Walker Evans photo exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Evans had a photograph of a structure similar to this one and he was a collector of signs like the ones I added. When I was a kid I hitchhiked many miles on Route 66 one summer.
Modeled in form•Z; rendered in ElectricImage.
"Homage to Irving Penn"
I was a commercial still life photographer for a long time and Irving Penn, who used the same film lab I did, was one of my heros. This image is a 3D version of Mr. Penn's photograph entitled "After Dinner Games". I modeled and rendered it in Form•Z to see if I could achieve the same look and feel he got in his photograph.
Modeled in form•Z; rendered in ElectricImage.
"Supermarket Monopoly"
Was originally made for (not surprisingly) Supermarket News, a trade publication, which, like others in this market, allows lots of creative freedom in exchange for not so huge budgets. The board art was made in Photoshop, as were other image maps and the rest was modeled in Form•Z; rendered in Electric Image. The playing pieces and some other elements are different from the original. One bit of humor: I asked the client if they wanted hotels, which would have been a piece of cake to model. No: they wanted shopping carts instead.
