The 1994-95 form•Z Joint Study

Award of distinction 1994-1995

Project Description: This project was a quest for a relationship of the design process and decision making in computer modeling. The process of decision making was related to the way software applications force/guide the user through a process which is highly intuitive and creative on one side, and limited by the design of the software and its limitations on the other.

Modeled with form•Z, rendered with Strata StudioPro, post-rendered with Photoshop.

PI's Comments:
The projects involved in this case challenged the ideas of creative digital studio environment to the full extent. The student's ideas and exploration distinguished him among other students in this particular field. The challenge was also that this student is an excellent designer and model builder that used to work on ideas primarily through models and hand sketches, but was able with some training to advance in the computer graphics in such an excellent manner.

Jury Comments:

Kent Hubbell, James Gibbs, and Alan Koch: It is thoroughly and beautifully completed, lots to look at, nicely documented. There is good use of surfaces and materials. We like the way it is broken down into component parts for viewing. We only wish that the author had taken fuller advantage of a more interesting backdrop instead of black.

Thomas Seebohm: I was impressed by the play of light and shadow and the tectonic character expressed in the images. Also interesting is the way the project is partially deconstructed to show the interiors which seems to be more effective than conventional sections. I would have hoped for some clues relating the detailed models to the overall design.
