Project Description: The task was to produce an accurate model of an ABB Robot arm. The model was to be used to accurately simulate all the possible axis movements of the arm through interactive user input. An animated presentation was also required, running through all the possible movements of the arm, including all the extreme limits. The ultimate goal was to produce a presentation that can be used as a training aid for setting up the robot.

PI's Reasons for the Nomination:
This was this student's first use of form•Z. The subject chosen enabled him to utilize many of the sophisticated features of the program. The final model was produced very accurately and in such a structured manner that it enabled the student to simulate all of the robot's movements in the final animated presentation.

The attention to detail was excellent. It enabled the final rendering to pick up the nuances of light and reflection as the arm cycled through all its axis movements. This student overcame many problems during the production process, and was not content until he had mastered and understood all the necessary techniques of the software.

Jury Comments:

William J. Mitchell: This is an impeccable piece of modeling work. The lighting has been done with great skill. And the images clearly show how this mechanical object works. Terrific for a first-time use of the software.

Thom Mayne and Cameron Crockett: Out of all the projects nominated for this category this one demonstrated best the ability to both model and render. The coupling of these two capabilities has allowed for better articulation of the model and needs not rely on distracting backgrounds.

Thomas Seebohm: This model of a robot arm has been modeled and rendered with loving care. Not only are all the details there but all inflections of the form are carefully modeled. Added to this is a careful understanding of surface quality and light and shadow; the result is of sculpture-like quality. Each of the different configurations of the arm is a new sculpture in a family of sculptures. This is technical rendering raised to an artform.

Software: form•Z, Strata StudioPro, De-Babelizer, Photoshop, Macromedia Director.
