      About the formZ
        Joint Study Program
This is a program by which AutoDesSys, Inc. supports
and subsidizes the learning of the new digital tools, primarily 3D modeling,
by students at Universities and Colleges worldwide. In recent years, the
program has also included a number of high schools. When schools agree
to incorporate 3D modeling in their curriculum, AutoDesSys
provides them with formZ licenses, one year at a time, at
the cost of material and processing. In return the schools agree to report
at the end of the year about their experiences, offer recommendations,
and share the projects produced by their students or researchers. AutoDesSys
assembles this material into an annual 150-page full color publication
and a CD which, in addition to the still images and textual reports, includes
multimedia projects such as movies, slide shows, and interactive displays.

         Currently in its
ninth year, the formZ Joint Study Program involves over
300 Universities worldwide, which translates to over 10,000 student
seats a year. The Annual formZ Joint Study Report has evolved
into an event that documents the excitement and progress of computer
aided design and 3D modeling education in the institutions of higher
learning. One of the traditions the program and its report has established
is the presentation of annual awards for the exceptional work of deserving
students. This year five awards of distinction and eight honorable mentions
          have been granted.
          The nominations:
To qualify for an award, a student needs to be nominated by the Principal
Investigator of the JS school where he/she is enrolled. In addition
to the images, the PIs are required to submit a summary description
of the nominated project and to state the reasons for which they think
the nominated student deserves an award.
          This year, there
were ninety (90) nominees from fifty-six (56) different schools.
          The categories:
The nominated projects were placed into four categories: Architectural
Design, Urban Design, Product and Industrial design, and Visualization/Illustration.
One Award of Distinction was granted in each category. Variable numbers
of Honorable Mentions were granted in each category.
          The Jury:
The selection of the awards was made by five jurors from outside AutoDesSys,
all experts in computer aided design. Two of the jurors are from academia
and three from the professions. All of the professionals have also been
involved with teaching and/or design criticism. The jurors are listed
          below, in alphabetical order.

          - Antony Atkinson
and Martyn Horne, Stem Ltd., Industrial Design, Coventry, UK

          - Daniel Kessler,
            AIA, RNL Design, Denver, Colorado

          - Robert Livesey,
FAIA, Director, Knowlton School of Architecture, The Ohio State
            University, Columbus, Ohio

          - William
            M. Louis, Willow Design, Inc., Encinitas, California

          - Kevin
            Matthews, Editor,
              ArchitectureWeek, Eugene, Oregon

        The process:
The projects of all the nominees were sent to the jurors as Acrobat documents
on CD-ROMs, which also included animations and slide shows that accompanied
some of the submissions. Names and school affiliations were not included.
The jurors returned their selections for the four awards and grades (0
to 10) for each of the other projects. Selection of a project for an award
was considered equivalent to a grade of 15. The grades were averaged and
the one project from each category receiving the highest grade was selected
for the award. Projects receiving an average grade of 8.5 or higher were
selected for the honorable mentions. The jury was also asked to comment
on why they selected these particular projects. Their comments are included
with the displays of the award of distinction and honorable mention winning
        projects.
         The winners:
Links to the projects of the Award of Distinction and Honorable Mention
winning students are displayed below. The awards and mentions also are
highlighted on the pages of the respective schools in the full JS report.
Some of the projects include slide shows or animations, which are included
on the CD-ROM supplement of this report. These projects are noted with
          a movie logo.
          The prizes:
All Awards of Distinction have received a formZ RenderZone
license with one year technical support and updates. They are also invited
to attend Acadia 2001, all expenses paid, where the awards are officially
          announced. In addition, AutoDesSys
will wave the processing costs of a 10-seat JS license for the school
they attend, for next year. Honorable Mentions have received diplomas
          commemorating the award. |
