Hello formZ Users,

We have frequently heard of problems when users install formZ with Virus Detection running. (There can occasionally be problems caused by other processes as well, although this is much less likely.)

In the past we have posted a process list so that non-standard processes can be ended, but thanks to Craig Williams and e-frontier's web site, it appears that there is an easier / better way (using MSConfig).

Here is a link to e-frontier's web site where this issue is discussed in more detail. In case they change their web site, or this page gets moved, here is the content of this page:

EDIT -- With Vista, after selecting Diagnostic Startup and clicking Apply, it will automatically switch to Selective Startup, and it will automatically disable all but the Diagnostic Startup items. It will also not ask you to restart, which you must do manually. Once this reboots, verify that your virus detection software os OFF, and install formZ. When this completes, you can then patch in Diagnostic Startup using either the automatic or manual patch process.

The Uninstall (if necessary) step mentioned above is not necessary, but if you already have the same version of formZ installed that you are going to install again, you should delete this folder.

Also, if you are installing formZ 6.1 or later, you will get an error that a Microsoft Installer or Service is not available. Just ignore this, and manually install the "vcredist..." from the Support folder (inside the installation folder for your version of Windows).

All due credit goes to e-frontier (and Microsoft) for this technique.

Note also that if you are using a Network Virus Detection program that you are unable to control, and you are using a local formZ key, then you can unplug your network cable and reboot your computer (in Diagnostic startup) to disable most network virus programs. When you reconnect the cable and reboot in Standard mode, it should enable itself automatically.

One other note: If you are using MSConfig with the Selective Startup option, Windows will forget your selective settings when you return to the Selective Startup mode. Therefore it may be useful to note which programs you have enabled / disabled, or make a screen capture so that it is easy to reset this.

Please print this out so that you can easily follow these instructions and guarantee that you get a good, clean installation of formZ (or any other software, for that matter).

Mathias,

Generally you do not need to disable other processes when installing, but if you do, then you will know that they have not caused any problems. Since there are thousands of different processes that could be running in millions of different combinations, it is not realistically possible to check for all possible conflicts, but it is possible to eliminate the possibility of such conflicts per the above.

For Virus Detection, almost every installation instructions for every piece of software will tell you to disable the antivirus auto-protect. (Note that the instructions we quote above are derived from another software developers web site.) If Virus Detection is active during an installation, it will create a corrupted installation that will not run properly, cause crashes, and have other issues.

Because the virus detection is closely observing the installation of software (to see if it is acting like a virus) it affects the results of this installation, similar to the effect known as the Observer Principle (for example, measuring the temperature of a very small particle will be affected by the initial temperature of the thermometer that is making the measurement). formZ is extra sensitive to virus detection auto-protect because (unlike some installations which just copy the application folder) formZ actually builds the application based on your installation code so that you get all of the features that you have paid for. And when software installations are modified, the result is rarely (ie, never) good.

So if you have virus detection, make sure to disable the auto-protect whenever installing any software, especially formZ. If you run lots of processes (Windows XP has ~18 processes standard, and you can see how many you are running from the bottom left corner of the Task Manager) you can probably benefit from the additional suggestions above.

Hope this helps,
